John M. Harwell Sr., age 82, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 29, 2024, at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. He was born on June 14, 1941, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the son of William and Dorothy (Grubb) Harwell. John was a 1959 graduate of Amity High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force and United States Army. He worked numerous years as a fiber optic technician for United Telephone and Sprint.

John was a member of Amvets Post #95 in Mount Vernon and enjoyed drag racing at Pacemakers and coaching in the girl’s softball league. For many years he excelled at and loved, umping, refereeing, coaching in the Fredericktown girl’s basketball program and playing in the Mount Vernon Men’s Softball League and Old Timers Softball league. Most important, John liked being active and always enjoyed the companionship he had with his family and friends.

He is survived by his children, John (Laura) Harwell Jr. of Lenoir, North Carolina, Lori (Mark) Hite of Stafford, Virginia, Lisa Richert of Mount Vernon, Leslie (JT) Dechant of Bellville and extended children, Bobbi Jo (Jason Rine) Milligan and Amy Jo Harding, fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, a brother, Larry (Dottie) Harwell of Chillicothe, two sisters, Cinda (Johnny) Boucher of Howard and Vicki (Dick) Maxwell of Fredericktown.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Harwell.

Friends may call on Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Lasater Chapel, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. The family will hold a private service and burial.
