MOUNT VERNON — Patrol Officer Sarah Wheeler received the prestigious Thomas Bartlett Award in a ceremony on Aug. 18.

The award recognizes outstanding performance in the line of duty and is named after former Mount Vernon Police Chief Thomas E. Bartlett.

Bartlett served the city from 1983 to 2006.

Police Chief Robert Morgan said the award centers on loyalty, integrity, and dedication. He said Wheeler received the award for her loyalty to the department, integrity within the department, and dedication to getting drugs off the street.

“Her diligence and her work ethic led her to be very effective in getting drugs off our streets,” Morgan said. “She consistently leads the department in arrests — and felony arrests specifically — in the patrol division.

“She got more than 235 grams of methamphetamine off the streets in a very short period of time,” he added. “That comes from knowing the players, knowing what we do, and just hard work. That’s the embodiment of the Bartlett Award.”

Wheeler started with the department in 2016 and will complete her eighth year in January 2024.
