MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Schools board of education scheduled a special board meeting for Sept. 30 at 8:30 a.m. to accept bids for two major construction projects: the replacement of the high school roof and the construction of the new health center.

Earlier in September, bidders took a closer look at the potential projects and facilities.

The estimated $1.2 million health center project is being funded by a statewide grant and COVID-19 dollars, known as ESSR funds, according to a previous Knox Pages report

Also at Monday’s meeting, Supt. Bill Seder announced the district is applying for free NARCAN nasal spray for the high school only. NARCAN Nasal Spray is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose emergency with signs of breathing problems.

“I’m not hearing any of those kind of needs from students, during the school day,” Seder said. “God forbid if we have to use it.”

Seder said he’s finding most public entities are now making NARCAN spray a standard item for public use in case of emergencies. A nurse or a trained individual would administer it, the superintendent added.

For school safety, the First Presbyterian Church was chosen as an evacuation point for Pleasant Street Elementary in case of an emergency.

“Hopefully we never have to use it but want to make sure we can get to a safe place,” Seder said. “Every building has a rally point.”

The Energy Fieldhouse is the district’s reunification point, where parents and students can reconvene. Seder said staff will practice the reunification process this year.
