MOUNT VERNON — The Friends of the Knox County Dog Shelter will host the second annual Pooch Plunge on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hiawatha Water Park, 100 Sychar Road.

The community is invited to bring their dogs for an evening of swimming and fun, all while supporting a great cause. Pooch Plunge gives local pups a rare opportunity to enjoy the pool at the close of the summer season, with all proceeds benefiting the Knox County Animal Care Fund.

The fund directly benefits the medical and daily needs of shelter dogs as they wait for their forever home.

“To see all the dogs running around together playing in the water is truly something
special,” said Knox County Dog Warden Brian Biggerstaff. “We are so thankful to the
City of Mount Vernon for allowing us to have this event at the Hiawatha Pool and for the support of the community.

“I know the dogs are thankful and have a blast, but to see the joy on all the dog owners’ faces watching their pups have the time of their lives is awesome.”

For safety reasons, only dogs will be permitted in the water during the event. A $10 donation includes admission for up to two people and one dog. Additional dogs or people may be admitted for a $5 donation each.

Requirements:

  • All participating dogs must have a valid 2026 dog license.
  • Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies.
  • Owners must provide proof of current rabies vaccination from their veterinarian at the gate.
