GAMBIER – Gambier Village Council passed an a resolution in opposition of the recent overturn of the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade.
“In a historic decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 24, 2022, the Court ruled to overturn the nearly 50-year right for women to seek a legal abortion,” the resolution reads.
“This current decision by the Supreme Court is a contradiction of the values and beliefs for many in the Village of Gambier and the Gambier Village Council adamantly stands behind the rights and freedoms of every individual and especially supports the rights of women to control the autonomy of their own bodies.”
Gambier council also calls for the state legislature to listen “to the majority of our state’s residents and make abortion legal in Ohio.”
The resolution passed unanimously and was brought forward by councilwomen Alison Furlong.
Gambier Mayor Leeman Kessler believes the resolution will signal the desire for local and state groups to recognize how this decision impacts their respective communities, similar to linking arms with other municipalities.
Though the village doesn’t have a healthcare facility, Kessler said Gambier will provide information and answer questions on what abortion care entails in the county.
“I think this was a dramatic enough decision that council felt the need to respond,” the mayor said.
“If voters want to know how the people that they are electing to office feel about issues we should probably let our statements be known,” Councilwoman Liz Foreman said. “I think they have the right to ask that of us.”
