MOUNT VERNON – Knox County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call Thursday afternoon on Bishop Road where a resident, Bob McDonald, said he had found what appeared to be a live grenade in a box of items he had taken out of the old Miller’s True Value hardware store in Danville.
When deputies arrived they were advised that McDonald had contacted a friend from the military and sent him a picture of it. His friend advised him to get it away from people and buildings due to be appearing to be a live grenade. It was then taken about 300 yards into a bean field, laid down, and everyone moved away from the area until deputies arrived.
The city of Columbus bomb squad was called and the picture of the grenade was sent to them.
While waiting for the bomb squad McDonald advised deputies that he had also seen what might be another grenade still in the Danville building. DPD Chief Dan Weckesser was called and told about the situation.

When the bomb squad arrived they went into the field, retrieved the grenade, and secured it in their vehicle. Then they traveled to Danville to the old hardware store on S. Market Street to check for another grenade. The bomb squad removed two other objects from the building’s second floor and secured them in their vehicle.
When KCSO deputies left Danville they escorted the bomb squad to the old Brinkhaven sand plant where personnel disposed of the grenades by controlled detonation.
KnoxPages.com contacted a member of the McDonald family this morning to ask for the picture he took of the first found grenade. He wasn’t able to provide it because the KCSO asked him to delete the picture from his phone.
