MOUNT VERNON – A dog who has been kept at the Knox County Animal Shelter since October was to be discussed by the shelter’s euthanasia committee at the Knox County Commissioners request. The dog, Nilly, had bitten a cleaner at the shelter and had been in isolation and under stress for some time.
Commissioners Thom Collier and Teresa Bemiller tell KnoxPages.com that news of their request “exploded ” on social media Thursday with some posters saying that the commissioners ordered the killing of the dog. Collier says that is “not at all true,” they ordered the meeting for the discussion. There is a happy ending, however, to this story. According to Collier, the Underdog Society has agreed to rescue Nilly and she will be taken from the shelter sometime today.
Collier clarified that the Commissioners are not members of the euthanasia committee and have no say in the difficult life or death decisions that must be made regarding animals at the shelter.
The committee includes interim dog warden Brian Biggerstaff, John Carhart, former animal control officer, and veterinarian Shawna Abrams.
