MOUNT VERNON – Food preparation demonstrations and a drawing for a small chest freezer will be featured at the mid-week farmer’s market at the Knox County Health Department. The market is held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, July through September, from 5-7 p.m. in the parking lot on the south side of the building. The next mid-week market is July 2.

Each farmer’s market at the health department features a food preparation demonstration to show attendees different ways to prepare locally grown food. The July 2 market will feature a demo by Executive Chef Paul Higgins entitled “Grill On!” The presentation will show how to grill different vegetables including tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini, peppers and other seasonal favorites.

Everyone attending the food demonstrations will get the opportunity to register for a small chest freezer. The more often you attend the market and the food prep demos, the more chances you have to register. The freezer give-away is part of Get Healthy Knox County with funding provided by United Way of Knox County. “We want to encourage people to freeze locally grown food so they can enjoy it later during the winter months,” said United Way Executive Director Jennifer Odenweller. “Eating better which includes at least five fruits and vegetables every day, is part of the Get Healthy campaign.” The freezer will be given away at the end of the market season in September.

Exhibitors at the health department market are the same growers that sell at the Saturday market on the Public Square in downtown Mount Vernon. The health department market is open to the general public and is held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the food demonstration will be moved inside.
