Sue McMillan of Mount Vernon, Ohio, peacefully transferred to The Church Triumphant on January 10, 2025. She was born on September 8, 1940, to Herbert and Ann Bailey of Howard, Ohio. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 54 years, John Simpson McMillan. She leaves behind her cherished daughter, Melanie McMillan.
Sue is also survived by her brother Don Bailey and his wife, Karen; sister-in-law, Susan McMillan; and five nieces and nephews: Brian Bailey, Keith McMillan and his wife, Kathy; Kent McMillan; Karen McMillan Scharf and her husband, Danny; and Michael McMillan and his wife, Beth. She was blessed with two dear cousins, Joan Gindelberger and Jeff Fussner, while another beloved cousin, Doris Neely, preceded her in passing last summer. The family is especially grateful to Norma Simpson, a cousin of Sue’s late husband, for her unwavering support to John and Sue throughout the years.
Sue’s love extended to her two cherished feline companions, Olivia and Esther, who will continue to be cared for by her daughter, Melanie.
Sue’s life was a testament to her steadfast faith in Jesus. A devoted student of the Bible, she delved deeply into scripture daily. Over the years, she served in various lay roles within the United Methodist Church and later in Independent Fundamental Baptist churches. In recent years, Sue found her church home at Faith Life Church in New Albany, which also has a watch location in Danville at Legacy Springs, where Sunday services are live-streamed. At Faith Life, her faith reached new heights as she embraced the principles of kingdom law. Sue’s newfound fervor brought her immense joy and opened a new chapter in her faith journey during her 80s.
With a compassionate heart for the elderly, Sue worked 42 years for the Levering family. From 1971 to 1985, she worked in social services at Country Court Convalescent Home, followed by 28 years as manager of The Living Center, an independent living facility, until her retirement in 2013. Sue was an active Soroptimist Club member and served on the health department’s advisory board.
Following retirement, Sue studied online at Liberty University to become a volunteer counselor at Starting Point in Mount Vernon. Later, she shifted her focus to working in Starting Point’s Baby Boutique, bringing her warmth and kindness to families in need.
As a member of Howard High School’s class of 1958, Sue was named valedictorian and homecoming queen. Although she earned a full scholarship to The Ohio State University, her life took a different path, where her focus was on marriage and motherhood. Later, she returned to school to take courses on gerontology, emphasizing her lifelong commitment to learning.
Sue was also a member of the Lucy Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her lineage traces back to a Revolutionary War patriot who not only undertook the perilous task of transporting ammunition but also founded a charity for widows and orphans of the war—a legacy of service Sue upheld throughout her life.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation Wednesday, January 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon, OH. The funeral service begins at 11 a.m. with Pastor Drenda Keesee officiating. Immediately following the service, Sue will be interred next to her husband at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens, 18260 Coshocton Road in Mount Vernon.
Sue’s family finds comfort in the promise of reuniting with their beloved Sue in heaven. As written in Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
For those who wish to honor Sue’s memory tangibly, the family suggests donations to Faith Life Church’s Legacy Springs camp in Danville, Ohio, to help continue Sue’s mission of sharing the Good News. Here is the link for giving. In the memo section, please write “Legacy Springs/in memory of Sue McMillan.”
