Long before forests, farms, and cities, Ohio was covered by a warm, shallow sea. Join us for an up-close look at real Ohio fossils and the ancient life they preserve. We’ll explore how fossils form, practice careful observation, and piece together what this place looked like hundreds of millions of years ago. Come ready to slow down, look closely, and discover the story hidden in stone.

Join us for several soups to choose from, along with sloppy joes, hot dogs and desserts.

Radium, the Curies’ newly discovered element, made gleaming headlines as the fresh face of beauty and a wonder drug for the medical community.  From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shone brightly during the otherwise dark years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of young women toiled amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covered their bodies from head to toe; they lit up the night like industrious fireflies. With such coveted jobs, these “shining girls” seemed lucky—until they began to fall mysteriously ill.  But the factories that once offered golden opportunities ignored all claims of the gruesome side effects.

As the fatal poison took hold, the brave shining girls became embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America’s early 20th century and in a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights that echoed for decades.

Their story is worth knowing.  Read the book and come talk about it.

This film presents an intimate portrait of Sir David Attenborough’s life and career–both of which span
nearly a century–from his boyhood days as a fossil hunter, through his early days as a BBC executive and host, to his revered status as the world’s foremost natural history presenter.

With behind-the-scenes footage from his years in the field, this documentary takes viewers from the Galapagos, to Canada, to Borneo, and back to the UK as Attenborough reflects on his life and considers the amazing aspects of nature he has observed in ways few have done and few others ever will.

All you can eat pancakes! Come and support your Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club. Proceeds benefit the children of Knox County. Bring the family!  Kids can meet local firefighters and touch a fire truck!!Breakfast includes pancakes, all the toppings, sausage, beverage for just $10 each.  Kids 10 and under just $5 each.  Advanced tickets through Event Brite using the QR code or link, or you may buy tickets at the door.  Kiwanis Club of MV is a nonprofit service club, part of a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. 

As pollinators make their first appearances this season, it is the perfect time to learn about our primary pollinators, bees! Come to the BFEC to learn about the role they play in supporting ecosystems, the challenges they have faced regarding climate change, and actions we can take to protect and support our bees moving forward!  Meet at the resource center.
