MOUNT VERNON — New Hope Industries joins the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The annual awareness campaign occurs each October. This year’s theme is “Access to Good Jobs for All.”
Reflecting this year’s theme, throughout the month, New Hope Industries will engage in activities to educate its stakeholders on disability employment issues and its commitment to an accessible and equitable work culture.
These efforts include Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr reading the NDEAM Proclamation, recognizing local employers with a token of appreciation, and highlighting individuals employed in the community through social media and print materials.
“New Hope Industries is proud to be a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Angela Sichel, community employment services manager. “We want to spread the important message that we value all perspectives, including those of individuals with disabilities.
“We strive to help individuals with disabilities find jobs in the community that match their skills, abilities, and areas of interest to help them become self-sufficient and lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.”
Angie Wise, CEO of New Hope Industries, said, “At NHI, we love seeing people succeed in the workforce. We offer a comprehensive set of services to support individuals on their path to meaningful employment. We not only provide the skills necessary to achieve goals, but we empower each person to be independent, grow healthy and strong relationships, and promote positive decision-making.”
Looking beyond the disability
Wise thanked the many employers who invest in these individuals.
“These employers have looked beyond the disability, seeing the ability, skills, and talents,” she said. “Thank you to the many individuals who have chosen NHI for services and supports. You continue to be an inspiration every day by overcoming challenges and barriers in our communities.”
“We are grateful for all the employers who work with our individuals and provide integrated and accommodating work environments to help them be successful,” Sichel said.
The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month educates the community about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.
Its history dates back to 1945 when it started as a one-week observation that focused only on people with physical disabilities. Later, it expanded to a full month.
Its name and scope evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing the workforce inclusion of people with all nature of disabilities.
“Our communities and economy are strengthened by the inclusion of all people, including people with disabilities,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy Taryn M. Williams.
“Their contributions have historically been vital to our nation’s success and are more important today than ever. We must build an accessible, equitable economy that fully includes the talent and drive of those with disabilities.”
