Betty B. Shaw

Betty Belle Shaw, age 84, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Brookdale Mount Vernon.  She was born on June 25, 1938, in Knox County, Ohio, the daughter of Echols and Mae (Stull) Gadd.

Betty could be described by most as being tough, but fair.  She could be bull-headed at times, but you always knew she loved you and wanted the best for everyone.  Betty also loved her animals, whether it was taking care of the horses or visiting the animal shelter, she would rescue or save them all if she could.

Betty and her late husband John “Red” Shaw owned and raced standardbred horses all around the United States and she enjoyed nothing more than attending those races at a local fair or racetrack.  Betty also liked auctions, always hoping to find that diamond in the rough, but most important to Betty was her family and friends and always catching up to share a good laugh or memory.

She is survived by her son Andy Bennett of Fredericktown; three sisters, Mary Braddock of Fredericktown, Carol (Alden) Coe of Mount Vernon, Garnet Cover of Mount Gilead and sisters-in-law, Mary Gadd of Newark, and Irene Gadd of Mount Vernon.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John “Red” Shaw, two brothers, Wes Gadd, and Shelton Gadd; a sister, Avanelle Spearman; brothers-in-law, Howard Cover, Dale Braddock, and Eldon Spearman.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023, beginning at 11 a.m. in North Fork Cemetery.  The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Betty Belle Shaw.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to good friend Jessie Doup and the caretakers at Brookdale Mount Vernon and Gentiva Hospice.

Memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to the Knox County Animal Shelter or Knox County Humane Society.
