Cloyd A. Yough, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away September 7th, Labor Day, 2026. He was born on July 14, 1939, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the son of Kenneth and Emma (Wolfe) Yough. Cloyd was raised in Mount Liberty and attended all 12 years in the Centerburg School System.

Cloyd was active in athletics throughout his school years, playing football, basketball and baseball. He especially enjoyed performing in class plays and took part in the freshman, junior and senior class plays. He was particularly proud of his Class of 1957 and served as Senior Class President.

Another proud accomplishment was being a charter member of the Knox County 4-H Saddle Club, which was the first such club in the United States. The club was started in 1946 and performed that year at the main grandstand at the Ohio State Fair. Cloyd remained involved in 4-H for 12 years.

Following high school, Cloyd attended Ohio University, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration. His college education was interrupted by a three-year stint in the United States

Army, which he considered one of his most honored experiences.

After college, Cloyd joined Cooper Industries, where he enjoyed a 35-year career. It was during this time that he met his wife of 53 years, Peggy Bancord. The couple was married in the parlor of the Mulberry Street Methodist Church in Mount Vernon.
Throughout their marriage, Cloyd and Peggy were active in various committees and served as members of the Sunday School Class at [church name]. They spent seven years living in Odessa, Texas, where Cloyd first worked as a salesman before becoming the region’s Parts and Service Manager and later the Eastern Regional Manager.

Cloyd eventually became Director of Parts Divisions for the Superior Engine and Compressor Corporation in Springfield, Ohio. In Mount Vernon, he served as a Finance and Marketing Manager and was Director of Marketing and Distribution for the After Market Services Group. He was responsible for a one-of-a-kind manufacturing operation and worldwide inventory and distribution centers in Mount Vernon and Dallas, Texas. At the same time, Cloyd served as Director of Canadian Field Services Division and oversaw the efforts of more than 350 employees.

After retiring from Cooper, Cloyd formed his own company, representing six companies with worldwide sales. He continued working until the age of 70, finding this second career a rewarding way to transition into retirement.

Above all, Cloyd was most proud of his family. He and Peggy raised four children, Jeff, Mike, Brian and Laurie. Together, they enjoyed traveling and made wonderful memories throughout Europe, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, the United States, Eastern Canada, the East and West Coasts, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Mexico and Branson, Missouri, which they visited at least 12 times. One of their most special trips was to Japan to visit their son and daughter-in-law.

Cloyd loved watching the Ohio State Buckeyes play football and basketball. He also enjoyed playing golf with his friends and sons. While participating in the Cooper golf league, his team won the league championship three consecutive years. He was fortunate to play many championship courses, including Southern Hills in Tulsa, Harbor Town, Champions in Houston, Oakland Hills and Oakmont.

Cloyd felt fortunate to have lived such a wonderful life. He was blessed with great parents, a brother and sister, a loving wife and family, four great children, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He also cherished the friendship of Diana Phillips, who shared his love of garage sales and auctions.

Cloyd will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his accomplishments in business, his love of golf and sports, his adventurous spirit and the many lasting memories he created with those he loved.

He is survived by his children, Mike (Andrea) Yough of Oklahoma, Brian Yough of Mount Vernon and Laurie (Matt) Kirkpatrick of Mount Vernon, seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, a son, Jeffrey Becker, a brother, Kenneth “Bill” Yough and a sister, Carole Jeannine Yoakam.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, October 2nd beginning at 11:30 AM at the Mulberry Church, 205 N. Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 where a military service provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans will follow. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Cloyd A. Yough.
