George Thomas “Butch” Fitzpatrick, 79, of Fredericktown, Ohio, went to his “big home” in the early morning hours of September 9, 2026. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his daughters, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Butch was born on October 24, 1946, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Winona Tufts “Mimi” and Thomas Jefferson “TJ” Fitzpatrick. A proud veteran, he served honorably in the United States Navy and treasured the memories of his service cruise in Asia, returning home just in time for the birth of his daughter, Stacie. Butch later worked for the Central Ohio Transit Authority and was a proud union member until his retirement.
When he married the love of his life, Joan, in 1976, he gained two beloved daughters and built a lifetime of cherished memories with their growing family. In his free time, he enjoyed watching Buckeye football, drinking an ice-cold Pepsi or Old Milwaukee, enjoying a cigarette, and above all, spending quality time with those he loved.
He is survived by his daughters, Stacie (Wayne “Buford” Scanlan) Cremeans, Jodi (Kris) Thorpe, and Julie (Kenny) McFarland; his grandchildren, Paul (Jayne Pinella) Cremeans, Kierra (Cameron Rowland) Dye, and Dalton (Leila) Dye; his great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Camden, and Callahan; his aunt, Betty Castle; his faithful feline companions, Miss Kitty and Big Boy; and many more family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Emalie Fitzpatrick.
His family takes comfort in knowing he is no longer just “fair to middling,” and they will forever be reminded of his presence during thunderstorms, hearing him bowling with God.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Gentiva Hospice—especially his nurse, Julia—and to dear friends Lexi and Susan for their compassionate care during his final days.
In accordance with Butch’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. His family will lay him to rest by scattering his ashes in the Outer Banks, reuniting him with Joan in the place they loved. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Butch’s honor to the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System or Gentiva Hospice.
