MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon’s home opener had a promising beginning, but the Yellow Jackets couldn’t maintain an early edge and fell 34-14 to Newark.
Coach Mark Weber’s squad enjoyed a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, but the Wildcats’ Jason Giblin pocketed a pick-six and the momentum turned.
Newark owned a 14-7 halftime lead and Giblin scored again in the third quarter to make it 20-7. MV closed to within 20-14 but the Wildcats answered to take a 27-14 bulge to the final period.
Giblin’s third touchdown, on a pass reception, finished the scoring.
Mount Vernon falls to 0-2 heading into next week’s home game with Highland.
Newark moves to 2-0 and will host arch-rival Zanesville on Friday night.
