Larry Cyril Saffell, age 90, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at The Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was born on September 3, 1935, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to the late Cyril and Ferol (Gatchell) Saffell.
After graduating from high school, Larry joined the United States Army and served his country proudly. He attended The Ohio State University and joined the Delta Chi Fraternity. Larry enjoyed stained glass, bowling, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of Jaycee’s, and president of the Fredericktown Boy Scouts. Larry was a member of the band, Esquires, and was their drummer. He married the love of his life on December 27, 1958, and was married for 67 years.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Shirley (Semon) Saffell; children, Mark (Shannon Ballog) Saffell, Laura (Michael) Spencer; grandchildren, Amy (Tom) Pruitt, Christi (Brett Skillman) Spencer, Own Ballog; great-grandchildren, Miranda (Reece Craker) Pruitt, Madison (Connor) Shoemaker, Michael (Domonique Shand) Pruitt, Payton Shinaberry, Paige (Iyan Posey) Shinaberry, Piper Shinaberry; great-great-grandchildren, Bexley, Tiger Lily, Camri, Saige, Kohen, Lainey, and Easton; nieces, Jackie Saffell-Sunnyboy, and Patty (Joe) Oddo.
Along with his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his brothers Lee and Jack; a sister, Carol; a nephew, Shawn Sunnyboy; nieces, Yara Sunnyboy and Linda Mollet.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 11 am until the funeral service starting at 1 pm at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home; 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050. Military honors will be observed by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
