MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is proud to announce a series of vibrant community initiatives to kick off the county’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Headlining these efforts is the installation of a new, large-scale public art installation in downtown Mount Vernon titled “Common Thread,” alongside a county-wide street banner program and a month-long summer event series at the CA&C Visitor Center.

Located on the south wall of 135 South Main Street (across from the South Main Plaza Dog Fountain) “Common Thread” is a mural beautifully mounted against the historic brick facade of the new Freedom Center downtown office.

“We’re thrilled to be part of celebrating America’s 250th birthday,” said Afet Kilinc, Executive Director of the Freedom Center of Knox County. “This exciting initiative and beautiful design just add to the vibrancy of downtown.”

Designed in a striking, contemporary barn-quilt style, the artwork serves as a literal and figurative patchwork of Knox County’s interlocking local points of pride.

“Each block of the mural weaves together a different piece of our local story, from a nod to the heart of Ohio, to a tribute to the local trails and green spaces,” said local artist Natalie Roth. “We wanted this piece to call to our local heritage and the incredible community of makers and creators who shape our villages every day.”

The piece also prominently features a built-in QR code, inviting visitors and residents to scan to discover more America 250-Ohio and Knox County events all year long.

“America’s 250th anniversary is about more than just looking back at national history — it is about celebrating the unique communities and local fabric that make places like Knox County so special,” said Olivia Toth, Executive Director of the Knox County CVB.

“Our villages and cities each carry their own distinct pride, but we are bound together by shared traditions, rural beauty, and an incredible spirit of collaboration. This mural and our broader efforts capture that exact sentiment.”

Preserving local history through “Knox Voices”

In tandem with the physical art installation, the Knox County CVB is capturing the living history of the county through the ongoing Knox Voices project.

Developed in close partnership with the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County, this community storytelling initiative invites residents from all walks of life to share and preserve their unique narratives, family histories, and memories of life in Knox County.

By documenting these personal histories, the project ensures that local voices are a permanent part of Ohio’s legacy for the national semi-quincentennial celebration.

A countywide celebration across the villages

To ensure the spirit of America250-Ohio is felt in every corner of the county, the Knox County CVB has officially sponsored an America250-Ohio street banner program across Mount Vernon and villages.

The patriotic red, white, and blue banners prominently unite local city and village names with the national milestone.

Banners are currently up in Centerburg, Fredericktown and Mount Vernon.
