The world lost a great man with the passing of John “Chip” Salyer, 68 of Danville Ohio on May 4, 2026.
Born in Ashland Ohio February 16th 1958 to parents John B. Salyer and Gloria Ross Salyer.
Chip grew up in the Ashland and Jeromesville areas and graduated from Hillsdale High School, excelling in baseball and wrestling.
In the wilds of the 70’s, with his gravel voice, bad boy demeanor and rocking an afro, Chip won the heart of his beloved wife Karen DeVan of Ashland. They were married June 14, 1980 and created a beautiful life together just short of 46 years. For nearly 40 years they made their home in the Mohican Valley along with their daughter Sara.
Chip was a friend to all who met him and was endearingly referred to as the Sheriff of Wally Road. Always watching out for the safety and well-being of his family and neighbors.
Chip was a man who cared deeply for his friends and family, and if you were sad or hurting it broke his heart if he couldn’t help. His endless summer campfires and the infamous shooting range were places to gather and share some beers and tell stories of past adventures and make plans for new ones.
Known for his meticulous mowing and yard work, Chip took pride is keeping his surroundings golf-course pristine. He was a wizard with mechanical work, be it an automobile, mower or tractor. He would work on vehicles until he was satisfied with the accomplishment. Sometimes requiring zip-ties and wire……he did what it took to keep things running. Enjoying the status well into adulthood, that he “still plays with trucks”.
Chip was happiest when he was surrounded by friends and family. He shared a great sense of humor and his endless wisdom with his grandchildren whom he loved and adored.
His first job at 14 was on a farm learning a strong work ethic and never shirked from a days hard work. He was a welder by trade, and engineered trains for Ashland Railway, , drove cement mixer for Ellis Brothers drove dump truck for Sands Gravel and retired from Godwin Dump Bodies.
Chip is survived by wife Karen, daughter Sara Smith (Steve), Grandchildren Dylan, Hannah and Jesse James, long time friend Justin (Kyra) Ball, Great Grandchildren Grayson and Audalynn, sisters Sylvia, Linda and Mary and two brothers Ricky and Robert and dear friend Landon.
He was proceeded in death by his parents John B. Sayler and Gloria Ross Salyer, son Thomas Paul, sister Karen and brother Johnny.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
