MOUNT VERNON — A Knox County Grand Jury indicted a Mount Vernon man for aiding James Walter Johnson, who was arrested in connection with a Licking County shooting.
Dale A. Woody, Mount Vernon, was charged with obstructing justice, a third-degree felony.
According to the indictment, Woody, 40, allegedly hindered the discovery, apprehension, prosecution, conviction, or punishment of Johnson for a crime, or assisted Johnson to benefit from the commission of a crime or harbored or concealed James Johnson in a crime, felonious assault, a second-degree felony.
The Mount Vernon Police Department arrested Johnson at a West Pleasant Street address on May 1. Knox County Sheriff’s deputies and the Licking County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the arrest.
Johnson is accused of being involved in a shooting following a domestic violence incident in Licking County the morning of April 25. He fled the scene after the shooting in a white 2012 GMC Terrain.
Local law enforcement reported locating the vehicle in the parking lot of Walmart on Coshocton Road and initiated a search for Johnson in the woods behind the store. The Ohio State Highway Patrol aviation unit and patrol officers assisted the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and MVPD in the search effort.

The grand jury indicted five other individuals on assault-related charges in its May 4 session.
Travis Hollar, Mount Vernon, strangulation, third-degree felony.
Kevin Curtis, Mount Vernon, felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and felonious assault on a peace officer, a first-degree felony.
Michael Glen Leeland Roy Ball, domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony. Ball was previously convicted of domestic violence in March 2022.
Zachariah T. Thomas, Howard, felonious assault, a second-degree felony.
Marshall A. Duda, Mount Vernon, domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony. Duda was previously convicted of domestic violence in 2023.
Drug-related and other indictments
Marcus A. Hoadley, Howard, aggravated possession of drugs (methamphetamine), a fifth-degree felony.
Lynette A. Gillam, Mount Vernon, aggravated possession of drugs (methamphetamine), a third-degree felony.
Joshua W. Shock, Mount Vernon, trespass in a habitation when a person is present or likely to be present, a fourth-degree felony.
Michael P. Ashcraft, Fredericktown, two counts of failure to provide change in vehicle information, a third-degree felony. Ashcraft was convicted in 2013 of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He was also previously convicted in 2018 and 2020 of failure to register.
Shawn G. Willet, Roseville, failure to provide change of address, a third-degree felony. Willet was convicted in Elkhart, Indiana, in 2010 of sexual conduct with a minor. When Willet registered with the Knox County Sheriff on March 21, 2023, he failed to provide a written notice of place of employment.
Justin M. Hatch, Mount Vernon, theft ($6,180.04 from a care facility), a fifth-degree felony.
Cynthia L. Forshee, Columbus, theft from a person in a protected class, fourth-degree felony; forgery, a fifth-degree felony; and identity fraud against a person in a protected class, a fourth-degree felony.
Forshee allegedly wrote a check out to herself, signed the name of an elderly individual, and deposited the check.
Stephen M. Silvia Sr, Mount Vernon, tampering with evidence (swallowing Xanax), a third-degree felony, and operating a motor vehicle without a license, a first-degree misdemeanor.
Dessiree N. Eggers, Mount Vernon, misuse of credit cards with purpose to defraud, a fifth-degree felony, and theft from a person in a protected class, a fifth-degree felony.
Eggers allegedly charged $821.92 on the card of an elderly individual.
