Janis G. Hawkins, 73, of Mount Vernon passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 23, 2025 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. She was born on July 21, 1952 in Medina to the late James and Doris (Vasbinder) Hawkins.
In 1974, Jan graduated from Baldwin Wallace with a bachelor’s degree in education and for the next 35 years taught school at East Elementary in Mount Vernon. She was dedicated to the children and always told them to follow your dreams; anything is possible. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. Jan was a huge Ohio State fan and enjoyed watching game shows, court shows and scrolling through Facebook. She loved her canine and feline companions, especially Snickers.
Jan is survived by her sister, Carol Hawkins; uncle and aunts, cousins, and friends.
The family will observe a private burial. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
