James David “Buck” Carter, 91 of Mt. Vernon passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025. He was born on October 17, 1933 to the late Henry and Zora (Thompson) Carter in Naugatuck, WV.

Buck was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served from 1953 to 1956 in Germany. On December 24, 1957, at Louisa, KY, he married the former Marlene Moore, who survives. He attended the Mayo State Vocational School at Paintsville, KY on the G.I. bill. After graduating in 1960, they moved to Ohio and bought a small farm. There they would live throughout their lives.

He was a retired farmer, having won many awards for having top yields in grain farming.
He is also survived by a son, Curtis (Amy) Carter of Mt. Vernon and a daughter, Rita Hicks (Tim) of Utica. He has five grandchildren, Kaylee Hicks (Ray), Brenner (Paige) Hicks, Canyon (Danielle) Carter, Cullen (Danielle) Carter and Caira (Reese) Clendening; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by 4 sisters and 1 brother.

A memorial service will be held at 7pm on Friday, April 18, 2025 at Brucker-Baker Funeral Home, 34 N. Main St., Utica. The family will recieve friends from 5-7pm prior to the service. Cremation has taken place, and the cremains will be buried at the Fairview Cemetery on Vance Rd. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Southern Care Hospice.
