FINDLAY — Forty-five Knox County Special Olympics athletes competed at the Special Olympics Ohio Northwest Spring Regionals on May 5 at Findlay High School.

Athletes competed in the following events:

•35 track and field athletes competed in walks, runs, relays, softball throws, mini javelin throws, running long jumps, and shotput.

  • 6 Bocce athletes competed in teams of two in pool-play bocce games.
  • 4 powerlifting athletes competed in bench press and deadlift.

They joined over 900 athletes for a day of competition that qualifies them to compete at the Summer State Games in Columbus from June 28 to 30.

Fourteen bowling athletes from Knox County will also attend the Summer State Games.

Knox County Special Olympics will host local Showcase Events for each of its sports in June. These events will be open to the community, who can come cheer on the athletes and celebrate their hard work and achievements for the season.

Knox County Special Olympics currently has 110 athletes and offers the following sports: athletics (track and field), basketball, bocce, bowling, and powerlifting.

Athletes participate in practices and local events and have opportunities to compete at regional and state competitions.

Coaches and volunteers help every athlete to have the opportunity to learn new skills, build their confidence, learn the values of sportsmanship, and build lifelong friendships.

Athletes are not charged to participate. The program covers the cost of uniforms, competition attire, equipment, and competition entry fees.

Knox County is planning to add swimming and cheerleading to the winter season.

If you would like to donate to support the athletes or to learn more about Knox County Special Olympics programs and athlete eligibility, please contact local coordinator Talisha Beha at tbeha@knoxdd.com or 330-390-5175.
