GAMBIER — The Village of Gambier is expected to take the reins of recycling electronics sponsored by Kenyon College this summer.
At December’s meeting, Gambier council was asked by Knox County Parks incoming Director David Heithaus if the village could house electronic recycling dump-off operations due to Heithaus accepting the park district job recently.
Before Heithaus became director, he had experience recycling electronics along with volunteers.
Heithaus noted that using volunteers helps make the operation cost-neutral, with Delaware Knox Marion Morrow (DKMM) subsidizing the operation.
Heithaus had student interns work the recycling drop-off point and then they would be paid through Kenyon College’s payroll line, he said.
Heithaus said operating the recycling drop-off takes roughly two hours and 22 minutes per month, with the drop-off running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first Saturday of the month.

The facility is located adjacent to the Gambier Community Center, between the center itself and the dog park where a large gray shipping container lays, Heithaus said. He added the operation has been active since April 2016.
All electronics that don’t have refrigerant in them can be taken.
“We can take anything other than dehumidifiers, refrigerators, and air conditioning units,” he said.
Village council seemed receptive to Heithaus’ request, Gambier village administrator R.C. Wise said.
Wise said he believes a seamless transition from Kenyon College to the village is possible, though more information is needed before the leap is taken, noting the next course of action is for the buildings and grounds committee meeting in January.
