Roberta Mae McNeil, age 93 of Mt. Vernon passed away Sunday morning September 10, 2023, at the
Ohio Eastern Star. Roberta was born May 26, 1930, in Mt. Vernon to Paul and Ellen (Hookway) Chadwick. She graduated from Sparta High School in 1948 where she was dass secretary, salutatorian and May Day Queen her senior year. After graduation she was employed at Shalimar in Mt. Vernon where she met her husband.
Charles and Roberta were married April 26, 1953, and celebrated their 70th anniversary this year.
Roberta had been a member of the Brandon United Methodist Church for 82 years where she raised her children to respect their elders and help one another. She taught Sunday school, gave children messages during church and helped wherever needed. Her beautiful Nativity tapestry is still part of their Christmas service.
Roberta was a homemaker, cub scout leader, sold Stanley products and caregiver to elderly family
members.
She always put everyone else first! Her family was her whole life. Mom always had some food ready for company and to send home with us. Even in her last days she would say, “Go home now and get some rest, I’ll be alright.”
She was the best cook and meal stretcher around. Canning, freezing and preserving to feed her family
throughout the year.
An excellent seamstress, she could make and mend anything from wedding dresses to baby clothes.
Mom was so creative!
I think the Holidays were her favorite time. Baking cookies, candy-making, homemade gifts and having all the family together. Cookie day with the grandkids was always a favorite time. Seeing her grandkids and great grandkids brought her great joy.
She never missed sending everyone a birthday card. Even in her last days, she reminded us of the cards that needed sent for the remainder of the year.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Ellen (Hookway) Chadwick, her brothers Harry
Chadwick, Dwight Chadwick and Gordon Chadwick. Her in laws John and Geneieve (Burgess) McNeil
infant son Michael McNeil and son-in-law Steve Kidd.
Left to cherish Robertas memories are her husband Charles McNeil Sr. of Mt. Vernon, her children
Charles (Pam) McNeil Jr. of Mt. Vernon, John (Anita) McNeil of Mt. Vernon, Jennifer (Kevin) Kidwell of
Bladensburg and Don (Jennifer) McNeil of Fredericktown. One brother John Chadwick of Martinsburg,
and sister-in-law Claudia Berger of Lewis Center, as well as 11 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Robertas family would like to thank the Eastern Star Lilly Neighborhood and Gentiva Hospice for their
