Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) Athletics has been an active participant in various community events and services, showcasing their commitment to the local community. From partnering with organizations to hosting regional tournaments, the athletic department at MVNU has shown a steadfast dedication to serving others.
“The tremendous support from our community is an example that other colleges and universities are trying to emulate,” Coordinator of Development for the Athletic Department at MVNU Paul McNeal said. “The community has embraced athletics at MVNU as well as the university as a whole. The support from our community is a blessing.”
Among the many community engagements, the MVNU Athletics department has been an active member of the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast Committee and the Pak United committee, contributing their time and effort to these important initiatives. Additionally, they have hosted several Ohio High School Athletic Association district and regional state tournaments across a variety of sports, further bolstering the community’s sports scene.
Beyond their involvement in specific committees and tournaments, MVNU Athletics has made significant contributions to the community through their participation in organizations such as the SPI board, Chamber of Commerce Ambassador program, Rotary President-Elect and Exchange Club. This multifaceted involvement allows MVNU Athletics to interact with a diverse range of community members and organizations, fostering connections and building relationships.
“It is a pleasure to serve the community in any way. Mount Vernon is a special community of people, and we have the privilege as a university to collaborate, serve and work alongside local businesses, schools, churches and other groups,” Athletic Director at MVNU Chip Wilson said.
Volunteerism has been a cornerstone of MVNU Athletics’ community engagement strategy. They have actively participated in events like Food For The Hungry, the First Friday sponsor and volunteer work for the MVNU Athletics Kids Zone, and various parades and events as sponsors. Moreover, they have lent their voices as guest speakers at banquets, events and national conferences, sharing their knowledge and experiences with others.
In addition to their broader community involvement, MVNU Athletics has also embraced initiatives focused on specific causes. They have been a part of Adopt-An-Elementary School at Pleasant Street and actively participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program on Martinsburg Road. One notable event is the annual Champions of Character Event held at Ariel Arena, where MVNU Athletics partners with the Mount Vernon City School District (MVCSD), bringing over 1700 students on campus for a men’s basketball contest and providing them with inspirational speeches on a selected topic.
“We have tried to increase our footprint in the community in a myriad of ways. From volunteerism, community service projects and being on several boards in Knox County, our goal is to show our gratitude for the support Mount Vernon has given,” McNeal said. “We want our community to know that MVNU Athletics, as well as all of MVNU, is a solidified piece of Mount Vernon.”
The athletic department at MVNU has consistently shown their commitment to the community by engaging in various acts of service and volunteerism. Their involvement in numerous events and initiatives demonstrates their dedication to making a positive impact in Mount Vernon.
“MVNU Athletics has become a staple in the community and a devoted partner with the city and other organizations,” Mayor of Mount Vernon Matt Starr said. “They are a shining example of faith, learning and service in action.”
With their strong presence and active engagement, MVNU Athletics continues to serve as an inspiration for other colleges and universities, setting an example of community involvement and service that others aspire to emulate.
“Being involved in our community is a win-win for all parties. We consider it an honor to be able to serve and be a part of all of Knox County. We are happy to be able to give back, and the areas we support are thankful for the assistance that we are able to give,” McNeal said.
