MOUNT VERNON — Patriotic songs filled the air this week as the Exchange Club of Mount Vernon and Knox County recognized local residents for proudly displaying the American Flag through its “Proudly We Hail” Flag Recognition Program.
The Exchange Club began the program in honor of America’s 250th birthday. The program’s mission is to encourage residents to take part in a meaningful community tradition.
On Friday, the Exchange Club chose several residents to recognize for their patriotic flag displays. Attendees gathered outside of the Knox County Habitat for Humanity ReStore building to honor these individuals. Tim Smith of the Exchange Club served as Master of Ceremonies for the event.
Also in attendance was the Knox County chapter of Sweet Adelines International all-women’s Dogwood Blossoms Chorus. The group performed a selection of patriotic songs throughout the event.
The chorus performed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “This Is My Country” and a sing-along rendition of “God Bless America.”
Also present was Amy Stoner, portraying Eliza Hamilton, who spoke about the importance of investing in and uplifting the youth.
The ceremony wrapped up with a presentation of the awards.
The Exchange Club selected community members based on their commitment to displaying the American flag correctly and with pride. Selected displays encouraged appreciation for the symbol and ensured proper display techniques, including illuminating the flag at night.
Tom and Cheri Thorton, of Fredericktown, received the Outstanding Residential Display award. The couple was nominated by Secretary of the Exchange Club Margaret Ann Ruhl, who was also in attendance.
Miller Electrical Solutions, of Fredericktown, received the Outstanding Business Display award. Howie Miller, owner of Miller Electrical Solutions was present to accept the award.
Scott and Tara Stiltner, of Mount Vernon, received the Overall Best Display award. Regina Biffath accepted the award on their behalf.
“The American flag is more than a piece of cloth — it is a symbol of our nation’s history, the freedom we cherish and the sacrifices made to preserve them,” Smith said.
