Marvin Owen ‘Mick’ Kanuckel, 73, died Friday, May 19, 2023, at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born August 21, 1949 in Mount Vernon, Ohio to Everett O. and M. Carlyn (Blanchard) Kanuckel. He graduated from Danville High School in 1967 and received his Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Dominican College in 1971. He was a public school educator for many years, most notably at East Knox Local Schools and Knox New Hope.
He was a master storyteller, friend, gardener, and naturalist. He was also a teacher, coach, mentor, and student of life. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting/fishing, quality time with family and friends, and sharing his stories and jokes with anyone who would listen. He loved history, reading, crossword puzzles, music, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Notre Dame football. He had a big heart, infectious smile, and a mind that never stopped until it did.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Kathryn Ann (Durbin) Kanuckel of Mount Vernon, whom he married April 26, 1973; five children, Erika (John) Kanuckel-Wolfe, Corey (Ashton) Kanuckel, Danielle Kanuckel, Erin (Henry Leiter) Kanuckel, and Karlyn (Allen Baker) Kanuckel; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; cousin Ann (Blanchard) Manning and family; lifelong friends Chet and Mary Jo (Mickley) Looney and Pat Ferry; and countless extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandmother Gladys (Thorne) Kanuckel; Uncle Clarence and Aunt Helen (Shaw) Blanchard; cousin Maurice Manning; and blood-brother Ralph Ferry.
A Celebration of Life will take place at St. Luke’s Community Center in Danville, Ohio on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. A catholic mass will precede the event at 1:00 p.m.
