Eugene McCoy

E. Eugene “Gene” McCoy, Sr., 87, went to his heavenly home on March 26, 2023, after a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family. 

Gene was born on October 21, 1935, to Stewart and Mary Margaret Runyon McCoy in Wharncliffe, West Virginia. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by stepmother, Leota McCoy;  foster parents, Paul E. And Elsie Spurgeon; 6 brothers and 3 sisters. He was also predeceased by an infant son, Michael McCoy, and a daughter, Barbara McCoy Parker.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Sylvia A. (Cagwin) McCoy; three children E. Eugene (Jodene) McCoy, Jr. of Sebring, FL, Timothy J. (Teresa) McCoy of Osage City, KS, and Susan (McCoy) (G. Thomas Long) of Mount Vernon, OH; grandchildren E. Eugene McCoy, III, Timothy (T.J.) McCoy; Amy (McCoy) Punches; Sarah (Adam) Hunter; Brian (Sarah) McCoy; Angela (Nick) Deni; Alex McCoy; Kasey (Rich) Friske; Jennifer Long; and Hannah (Bryce) Curtis; and 15 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 half-brother and 3 half-sisters. 

After moving from Virginia as a young child, Gene grew up in central Ohio. Gene graduated from Howard High School in 1953 and the University of Cincinnati in 1958. After a 32-year career at Cooper Bessemer/Cooper Energy Services where he was a worldwide traveler, Gene went on to co-own and run radio stations in Osage City, KS and Hastings, NE. Upon retirement, he and Sylvia enjoyed 22 years in Zephyrhills, FL before moving back to Mount Vernon, Ohio in 2020. Gene was active in his churches, communities, and professional associations.

A man of unwavering faith in Christ Jesus, Gene was an active member of the Gideons International for 37 years. Gene was also a member of both New Hope Church of Zephyrhills, FL and Brandon Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Visitation will be held at Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, Thursday, March 30 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Additional visitation will be held one hour preceding a Celebration of Life at the Brandon Baptist Church, 13513 Sycamore Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio on Friday, March 31 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Brandon Cemetery
