MOUNT VERNON — Lindsey Nelson moved to the Rocky Mountains and the mile-high city of Denver 20 years ago, far away from Mount Vernon.

That was the setting where she fell in love with pilates.

Now, Nelson has moved back home after wanting to be closer to family but wanted to keep her love of the exercise alive — yet she wasn’t sure what the response would be from the community.

Thus the creation of Roots Down, Nelson’s own pilates studio.

At 135 S. Main St., Nelson has several “reformer machines,” that allow multiple forms of stretching, core and rehabilitation exercises. The studio is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Hours are subject to change based on client availability and Fridays may become available in the future, Nelson said.

In Denver, Nelson focused on “one-to-one” classes, having a background in the rehabilitation, she said.

Now, Nelson teaches one on one and group classes.

Nelson says a “wide variety of people” show up to Roots Down to get a pilates exercise in, and her clientele range in age from 13- to 93-year-olds.

Nelson says doing pilates can produce better posture, less chronic pain in the joints, balance alignment and strength your core along with deep breathing.

“It feels good to move my body,” she said. “It makes me feel alive.”

Nelson is hoping the “energetic experience” is something she can share here in her hometown.
