GRANVILLE — Sixteen golfers from three Knox County high schools now sit one step away from the state tournament, having qualified for districts at Division II and III sectional tournaments earlier this week.
CENTERBURG
Centerburg’s boys golf team qualified for districts, having placed second out of 11 teams at the Division II sectional tournament at Denison Golf Club in Granville on Tuesday.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to districts.
Sophomore Bennett Hill led the way for the Trojans, firing a 73 and finishing second overall to Johnstown senior Clay Bruning, who shot a 70. Centerburg freshman Nicholas Meyers tied for fourth overall at 75, while sophomore Josh Hackett finished eighth at 80.
Dallas Cornett, the team’s lone senior, fired a 89 and tied for 22nd overall. Junior Andrew Meyers shot a 92 and finished tied for 29th.
Centerburg fired a team score of 317 – three strokes behind first-place Columbus Academy (314) and 11 strokes ahead of third-place Heath (328).
The Trojans will compete at districts on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Turnberry Golf Course in Pickerington. The top team and individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the Division II state tournament.
The Centerburg boys golf team qualified for the Division III district tournament last year, but fell short of qualifying for state. The Trojans placed third at districts with a team score of 318, 16 strokes behind first-place Newark Catholic.
The top team and the top individual not on a qualifying team advanced to state, and Centerburg’s top golfer, senior Dalton Hall, finished just beyond the cut at 10th overall. His score of 78 was five strokes off the leader, Worthington Christian senior Sam Evans, who qualified individually.
On the girls side, Centerburg sophomore Avery Glenn qualified for districts Monday, firing a 85 and tying for sixth place overall at the Division II sectional tournament at Blacklick Woods Golf Course in Reynoldsburg.
Glenn was the only Trojan to qualify for districts. The team finished fourth at 399 strokes, nine strokes behind third-place Worthington Christian, and the top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to districts.
Glenn was the second of three individual qualifiers – two strokes behind Utica junior Olivia Dickson (83) and one stroke ahead of Highland sophomore Ceci Grassbaugh (86).
Centerburg senior Somi Bright finished 17th overall Monday with a 100; freshman Evie Stowe finished tied for 18th at 102; sophomore Olivia Griffith placed 27th at 112; and senior Melanie McLaughlin placed 35th at 131.
Glenn will compete at the Division II district tournament at Darby Creek Golf Course in Marysville on Monday, Oct. 3. The top team and individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the Division II state tournament.
Glenn advanced as an individual to the Division II district tournament last year, but fell short of the state qualifying mark, finishing tied for 16th overall with a 93. The top team and the top individual not on a qualifying team advanced to state, and Glenn finished 21 strokes behind Columbus South freshman Kristina Ma (72), the tournament’s medalist, who qualified individually.
FREDERICKTOWN
Fredericktown’s boys golf team qualified for districts, having placed third out of 10 teams at the Division II sectional tournament at Oakhaven Golf Club in Delaware on Monday.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to districts.
Junior Will Streby led the way for the Freddies, firing a 79 and finishing tied for second place overall. He finished seven strokes off the leader, Jonathan Alder junior Brady Fox (72).
Fredericktown senior Ian Muka tied for seventh place overall at 82, while freshman Cooper Lowe placed 25th at 95. Sophomore Cayden Statzer and freshman Robert Streby each fired a 98, finishing tied for 29th overall.
Fredericktown finished with a team score of 354 – one stroke ahead of fourth-place Bishop Hartley (355) for the final district spot. The Freddies finished five strokes behind second-place Buckeye Valley (349) and 41 strokes behind first-place Jonathan Alder (313).
Fredericktown will compete alongside Centerburg in the district tournament at Turnberry Golf Course in Pickerington on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The top team and individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the Division II state tournament.
The Fredericktown boys golf team qualified for the Division III district tournament last year, but fell short of qualifying for state. The Freddies placed fifth at districts with a team score of 355, 53 strokes behind first-place Newark Catholic.
The top team and the top individual not on a qualifying team advanced to state, and Fredericktown’s top golfers, Streby and Muka, finished just beyond the cut, in a tie for 14th overall. Streby and Muka each shot a 81, which was eight strokes off the leader, Worthington Christian senior Sam Evans, who qualified individually.

Fredericktown’s top golfer, junior Ava Parker, finished just outside the individual qualifying cut. She placed 20th overall with a 103 – 17 strokes behind Highland sophomore Ceci Grassbaugh (86), who finished eighth overall and served as the third and final individual district qualifier.
Fredericktown senior Hannah Bressi finished 31st on Monday at 124, while senior Darienne Hammond placed 39th at 145. Sophomore Adiel Bressi finished tied for 40th overall at 146, while junior Hannah Hogle ranked 44th at 173.
EAST KNOX
East Knox’s boys golf team qualified for districts, having placed fourth out of 14 teams at the Division III sectional tournament at Darby Creek Golf Course in Marysville on Tuesday.
The top six teams and top six individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to districts.
The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Ashton Priest, who fired a 78 and finished ninth overall. Priest finished 12 strokes behind Newark Catholic junior Brian Luft, who fired a 66 and earned medalist honors.
East Knox junior Dylan Reed placed 25th overall at 91, while freshman Beau Keller finished 27th at 93. Junior Aidric Bocock fired a 102, tying with five other golfers for 38th place, and freshman A.J. Baxter finished 57th at 117.
The Bulldogs finished with a team score of 364 – 65 strokes behind first-place Newark Catholic (299), 43 strokes behind second-place Mechanicsburg (321) and 37 strokes behind third-place Worthington Christian (327).
East Knox will compete at districts on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Turnberry Golf Course in Pickerington. The top team and individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the Division III state tournament.
The East Knox boys golf team qualified for the Division III district tournament last year, but did not make the state cut. The Bulldogs finished sixth with a team score of 358, 56 strokes behind first-place Newark Catholic.
The top team and the top individual not on a qualifying team advanced to state, and East Knox’s top golfer, Priest, finished just beyond the cut at 12th overall (tied with Centerburg senior Levi Houck). His score of 80 was seven strokes off the leader, Worthington Christian senior Sam Evans, who qualified individually.
