MOUNT VERNON — Forecasts indicate the skies are set to clear on Monday, after several days of rain.
That’s just in time for Memorial Day, the holiday dedicated to remembering and honoring those who have lost their lives fighting to preserve America’s freedoms.
Here is a list of the Memorial Day services in Knox County this year:
Mount Vernon: The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday. It will travel west on East High Street (starting at George Street), then turn south on Gay Street, east on Vine Street, north on Park Street, and east on East High Street, concluding near the staging area.
There will be a traditional Memorial Day program afterwards, in front of the Knox Memorial.
Danville: The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. It will travel south on South Market Street, beginning just north of the square and ending at Memorial Park.
There will be a small service at Memorial Park afterwards.
Fredericktown: Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. Monday on Public Square. There will be an invocation, followed by the raising of the U.S. flag and the playing of the National Anthem. A ceremonial wreath will be laid at this time.
The parade will begin shortly thereafter. It will continue to Forest Cemetery, where a formal ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Centerburg: The parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. Monday. It will start at the corner of Church Street and Hartford Avenue and continue to Eastview Cemetery.
There will be a ceremony at the cemetery starting at 11 a.m. It will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Capt. Peter Hayden Chapman II, a Centerburg native who lost his life serving in the Vietnam War. It will also honor all others who have died defending America’s freedoms.
The U.S. Air Force Band of Flight will be present at the ceremony, and will also provide a free concert at 2 p.m. at the Centerburg High School auditorium.
Bloomfield: The Bloomfield Cemetery will hold its service on Monday at 1 p.m. The keynote speaker will be United States Air Force Veteran Dave Peck. The invocation and benediction will be given by Pastor Bryan Henderscheidt of Centerburg Christian Church.
The Highland Marching Band will provide the music and the award-winning Highland NJROTC will present the colors. The whole service will be emceed by Nate Clark.
