MOUNT VERNON — Local law enforcement is investigating a video of a Knox County Career Center student with a gun that circulated virtually Friday morning.
KCCC released a statement Friday afternoon informing the community that students reported to a teacher what was described in the statement as a concerning video of a classmate. The teacher contacted administrators immediately.
“The situation was investigated and it was determined that there was no immediate threat to the KCCC students and staff,” part of the statement reads. “Law Enforcement was contacted and is currently handling the situation.”
Knox County Sheriff David Shaffer said the person in the video is holding a gun, displays it to the camera and puts it in a backpack. The person does not make any verbal threats, Shaffer said.
As of 5 p.m. Friday, Shaffer said detectives had retrieved the firearm and it was unknown whether the firearm was functional.
In addition to KCCC and local law enforcement, Knox County Children Services and the juvenile prosecutor are involved with the investigation, Shaffer said. No charges had been made at the time of this article’s publication.
The video surfaced amid a TikTok trend warning of nationwide school shootings or other violence on Dec. 17. It is unclear if the video of the Knox County student is related to the social media trend.
