The Woodward Opera House in downtown Mount Vernon is poised to reopen after an extensive renovation. On the National Register of Historical Buildings, the Woodward is the oldest authentic 19th-century theater in the country.

While the underlying structure of the stage is being maintained, modern equipment is being installed to make the theater practical and functional for today’s usage. This allows it to keep its historical charm while being flexible for multiple uses. The paintings that used to adorn the walls on either side of the stage have been restored and will soon be returned to those spots for the official opening.

The main balcony area was separated in the Woodward from the back section, which in the segregated practice of the times, was reserved for African-Americans. While no longer segregated, the theater will maintain the wall between sections as a reminder of the progress that has been made.

This newly built chandelier is based on the design of the theater’s original chandelier, which was visible in one of the historical photographs of the theater which the restorers have collected.

In this view from the dress circle of the horseshoe shaped balcony, stored seats can be seen on the main floor. To make the venue usable for more events than just shows, the decision was made to flatten the previously raked floor and use moveable chairs instead of permanently installed seats. When set up for performances, the chairs will face the stage.
