MOUNT VERNON – Over 170 volunteers worked together to clean up the Kokosing River from Riverside Park to Millwood at the annual River Rally Cleanup Saturday. Knox County Recycling Coordinator Randy Canterbury says the volunteers came from the community, Kenyon College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Mount Vernon High School Key Club and a veterans group – Paddle for Heroes.

Beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing into the early afternoon volunteers recovered the following:
-69 tires
-2 car batteries
-1 box spring
-office chair
-metal push lawn mower
-sleeping bags
-styrofoam
-miscellaneous trash

Canoes were provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Kokosing Valley Canoe Livery, and private donors. Transportation was provided by Knox Area Transit, the local Fish and Game Association and ODNR.
The Ohio EPA provided grants to provide posters, disposal, and waterproof radios.
