MOUNT VERNON – Downtown dining options diminished this weekend as Athens Greek Restaurant on the northwest corner of the Public Square closed their doors. The announcement was made on Facebook Saturday night. No specific reason was given in the post.

Sunday the restuarant’s sign was being taken down and a moving truck was seen outside the building.

The official announcement came Sunday afternoon from proprietors, Roger McCoy and Myron Coblentz, also the owners of The Southside Diner in Mount Vernon, Watt’s Restaurant in Utica, and two other Athens Greek Restaurants in Mansfield and Ontario, Ohio.

“Our success is in providing quality food, great customer service, and reasonable prices. When locating to the historic district of downtown Mount Vernon we used this same familiar and comfortable philosophy and Athens on the Square has thrived in a competitive market.”

“[We] have decided to consolidate efforts managing the day to day operations in the remaining four restaurant locations, while keeping our standards high, will be the priority;” expressed McCoy, “and, we will be able to utilize the Athens’ staff, moving them into our other restaurants as needed.”

“We continue to look forward to serving our customers at these other restaurants,” said McCoy. “Thank you to our loyal Athens Greek Restaurant customers over the past four years. We will be adding some your favorite Greek dishes to our menu at Southside Diner. We invite you to join us at our Athens Greek Restaurants in Richland County and to find your way to Watt’s in Utica, and to the Southside Diner in Mount Vernon.”

The closure comes less than a month after a new cafe opened on North Main Street, just a few blocks away.
