MOUNT VERNON – The MVHS and Gahanna-Lincoln High School debate teams are joining forces to host a presidential debate on Saturday, October 1 at 6:30pm in the MVHS Theater. It is free and open to the public.

Teams from both schools will make up each side with 2 people representing different policy areas (foreign policy, taxes, economy, healthcare, national security, trade etc.) There will be an opening statement from each side and then at least one question will be asked of each policy area. Each side will get a chance to respond and then a short “crossfire” period will occur. Closing statements will follow at the end.

This is a first joint event for MV and Gahanna. These usually rival schools are proud and excited to work together and host this event for the community. They believe it is the responsibility of citizens to be informed about the issues they face and to discuss those issues with their neighbors intelligently and responsibly. They hope that this event will help to inform the public and facilitate that discussion.

Both teams have nearly 40 students who compete around the state in various events ranging from dramatic acting to simulating the US Congress.

Some sample questions:

*What is your general vision for America?

*What is the best strategy to defeat ISIS?

*What role should the government play in stimulating job growth?
