MOUNT VERNON – The new M.C. Sports store will be opening on Oct. 20, according to a company spokesman.

Ed Rix, vice-president of marketing for the company, said there will be a “soft opening” on Oct. 20, and a grand opening the week of Oct. 30. He added that construction on the 24,000 square foot building is nearing completion. It is located at 931 Coshocton Avenue, behind the Tim Horton’s restaurant, the site of the old Chargers bowling alley, which was demolished in 2005.

Rix said company leaders decided to open a store in Mount Vernon, in part, because the local community is “vibrant and active” and that fit well with the company’s character.

“I think one thing that [area residents] will find is that we are very community-focused. MC stands for My Community,” Rix said. “We also felt like that market was underserved in sporting goods. People have to take quite a drive to buy the type of sporting goods and outdoor, hunting and fishing equipment that we offer.”

He said the store will offer items for people of all ages, but, it is particularly aimed at families with children, from older elementary age through high school age. About a third of the merchandise is comprised of hunting and fishing supplies. Rix added that MC Sports will  have about 20 employees at the Mount Vernon store, depending on the season.

“We set aside resources to support local sports and schools. We are big about giving back to the community we serve, and we put dollars behind that statement. You will find that we are a great community partner.”

M.C. Sports is headquarted in Grand Rapids, Michigan and has over 70 stores in the Midwestern United States. They offer a wide variety of sports apparel and equipment.
