MOUNT VERNON — The 2,000 residents signed up with the city’s aggregate electric program will soon see a slight increase in their monthly bill.
Beginning in September, AEP Energy will assess a capacity charge of three-tenths of one cent per 1,000 kilowatt hours. Mayor Richard Mavis said that for the average citizen, the increase will be around $1.50 a month. The charge, designed to enable AEP to meet special demands, will be listed as a separate line item on the bill.
“That’s not what people want to hear. I know everyone’s sensitive about utility rates,” he said.
The city’s contract with AEP Energy expires July 1, 2017, at which time the contract will be rebid. Mavis said the anticipation is that rates will go down, even with the capacity charge included.
