MOUNT VERNON – Learning that homelessness isn’t just a big city phenomenon was a shockto Melissa Moss. Seeing people camping in the freezing cold here in Knox County one winter several years ago touched her compassion, and learning that the county had a shelter that protected them from the elements, she wanted to help. She and her husband began donating clothes and bringing in snacks. And four years ago, she began to volunteer, overseeing guests in one of the evening shifts.
“You form this bond with the guests,” the Fredericktown resident said. “They all have a story and it’s really neat to hear about their life before falling on hard times. There’s not a single night that I come home from the shelter that I don’t feel so blessed.”

The Winter Sanctuary homeless shelter, located at 401 W. Vine St., is staffed by volunteers who oversee guests during its operation, Nov. 1- April 1. The shelter is now enlisting additional volunteers. There are three shifts for each side (men’s and women’s): 6:30 p.m.-10 p.m.; 10 p.m.-6 a.m.; and 6 a.m.-9 a.m.
Volunteers communicate with shelter staff and other volunteers when necessary and may also assist in screening new guests. While no specific skills are required, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and able to engage with guests in a non-judgmental, affirming way. Despite being a woman, Moss said she has never felt unsafe overseeing the male shelter. “I’ve never felt that I’m in harm’s way,” she said. “They become your friends and they look out for
your safety.”
Anyone interested in volunteering or wishing to find out more should attend one of two training sessions to be held 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 in the lower level meeting room of the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry St. To receive an application form, or for more information, call (740) 392-9277 or email wssheltercoordinator@gmail.com. Applicants must undergo a background check.
