MOUNT VERNON – Knox County’s new dog warden, John Carhart, met with the county commissioners Thursday to give them an update on the number of dogs up for adoption and the condition of the facility on Columbus Road. He says things are getting cleaning up and organized, dogs are getting surgeries, and moving out.

As of Thursday morning, there were 51 dogs up for adoption at the Animal Shelter. Carhart and the commissioners agreed that use of the shelter’s website and social media are key to getting the word out to the public about the dogs awaiting adoption. There are already county personnel who can work on the website.

Carhart said, “Basic, professional, and informative [are] key as far as I’m concerned and getting dogs exposure so they can find homes. The more awareness we can do that, with social media, the better. But I think getting the website back up is  going to be key.”

KnoxPages.com has partnered with the shelter and posted pictures and information about dogs that have been at the shelter for more than two months. KP will continue that in the months ahead.

Carhart reminds the public that if you see a dog running loose call the 740-393-6713. If it’s after hours, leave a message. Carhart says if you are being bothered by a neighbor’s barking dog, contact the neighbor first to see if you can resolve the issue. He says courtesy is the big thing in that type of situation.

There are an estimated 9,000 licensed dogs in Knox County. Those dog owners who have yet to renew the licenses can do so at the county auditor’s office. Licenses start at $16. Funds collected through the licenses are used to support the animal shelter and help the dog warden address wildlife and livestock issues.
