MOUNT VERNON – The Ohio State Highway Patrol, in conjunction with the Mt. Vernon Police Department and Knox County Sheriff’s Office announced today that an OVI checkpoint will be held from 8:00 p.m. tonight to 12:00 a.m. Sunday on State Route 36, Coshocton Avenue in Mount Vernon.

The OVI checkpoint, funded by federal grant funds, is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers.

The checkpoint will also be held in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes.   Last year in Knox County, there were 2 fatal crashes, both of which involved impaired drivers, resulting in 2 lives being lost.  This area was identified after reviewing OVI related crash statistics from the past two years and through the first quarter of this year, along with locations of OVI arrests made, indicating the need to make a concentrated effort in this area.

The Patrol says if you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.
