MOUNT VERNON – The third and final concert in the Summer Music Garden series will be August 17, 2014 from 4 to 6 pm in the Children’s Garden located behind the Knox County Career Center. Sponsored by a grant from the Ariel Foundation and the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County, these concerts are free to all and appropriate for all ages. Attendees are invited to bring a picnic supper, blankets and chairs, and should be prepared to enjoy a variety of live music, as well as the beauty of the garden’s flora and fauna. In addition, the Science Play-Space Initiative, better know as the SPI Spot, will provide a hands-on activity for children of all ages to explore the fun of science!
August’s concert features Padula Oblongata, a Hammond B3 organ-based jazz and blues quintet, featuring Michael Padula, former touring organist with the Platters. Members of the group include Ted Buehrer on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ross Feller on saxophones, Ed Schiebel on percussion and Skip Trask on drums. In addition, Andrew Clarkson will be playing guitar for this event. As stated on their website, “While every human being has a medulla oblongata (the lower portion of the brain, housing the autonomic nervous system’s command center for basic bodily functions), it’s thought that only a small percentage of the population possesses a ‘padula’ oblongata. The science is sketchy as to its primary function in the human body, but recent research has revealed that one’s proclivity to be ‘funky’ resides in the inner workings of this ‘organ’ ”. This jazz quintet is well-known in the area, and more information can be found on their website www.padulaoblongata.com
