MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Commissioners passed a resolution Thursday appointing Michael Miller as acting Knox County prosecutor. The appointment takes effect Wednesday.

Currently an assistant prosecutor, Miller will replace Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher, who resigned following his appointment as Mount Vernon Municipal Court judge. Gov. John Kasich appointed Thatcher to the municipal bench on July 3. Thatcher’s resignation as prosecutor is effective Tuesday; he will be sworn in as judge on Wednesday and will assume office on July 21. He replaces Judge Paul Spurgeon, who retired June 30.

Miller, who will reach his one-year anniversary in the prosecutor’s office on Tuesday, said his appointment as acting prosecutor is a procedural appointment to make sure someone is in place until Thatcher’s successor is named.

“My hope is to ensure a smooth transition between when John leaves and the Republican Party decides to name a replacement,” said Miller. “It is my understanding that the Republican Central Committee will meet the evening of July 21. Whoever is named will take over on July 22.”
