GAMBIER – Knox County Head Start and Gambier Child Care Center children took a field trip Monday to visit the Gambier community’s United Way thermometer. While on the porch of Peoples Bank of Gambier, Bill Levering, 2013 campaign chairman, posted a record 95% of the $800,000 campaign goal on the campaign thermometer. Raising more than $760,000 to-date, United Way is currently experiencing a record high in the temperature of the campaign, especially for a very cold, early December.
While talking about collecting money to help kids go to preschool and help families in our area, one child asked ‘if that thermometer is almost at 100%, shouldn’t we be warmer than we are?’ Another child quickly followed, ‘and if we need more money we can just go inside the bank; we should go ask them now…I know they are in there.’ The children gave Levering a number of options for reaching the goal.
To keep the children warm on their walk through Gambier, new hat and mitten sets were given to the children courtesy of a partnership between United Way and Kirlins Hallmark customers.
Community members who desire to make a charitable contribution toward United Way’s effort to improve the quality of life for all community residents can do so via mail to United Way at 110 East High Street, Mount Vernon, OH 43050 or by credit card on uwayknox.org under the “give” tab.
