MOUNT VERNON-The MVHS debate team staged an intra-squad mock debate Wednesday evening at the High School theater. Students debated “Resolved: U.S. policy in the Middle East hurts national security.” Audience members voted at the conclusion on which side, affirmative or negative, won the contest.
Following the mock debate, advisor Jeff Gottke announced that two members of the team, Stephen Rowe and Ben Cochran, competed in a National Speech and Debate tournament in Birmingham, Alabama last June. The pair finished 22nd in the country, the best finish of any team in MVHS history. Gottke presented Rowe and Cochran with plaques to acknowledge their tournament accomplishment.
The Speech and Debate team’s next competition is set for November 2 at MVHS.
