FREDERICKTOWN — The theme of this year’s Fredericktown Tomato Show, “Freedom. Unity. Remembrance.”, was on full display at Saturday’s parade.
A storm hanging over the village left residents of the area concerned the parade would be canceled — but the celebration persisted despite the dreary weather and slick roads.
With little hesitation, the Fredericktown Chevrolet’s Parade set off from the Police Department at 12:30 p.m.
Ponchoed parade participants embraced the deluge with a smile and wave, while families lined the streets to catch candy and toys in their umbrellas and rain jacket pockets.
American flags and tomato balloons decorated trucks, tractors and the occasional school bus. Those walking on the ground huddled together under umbrellas or took a chance to dance under the rain.
The parade brushed by the fairgrounds, where some took a chance to peel off for the last day of fried food and carnival rides. Those that stuck around were rewarded when the sky broke with sunshine following the parade’s end.
