MOUNT VERNON — Changes are in the works for the 900 block of Coshocton Avenue, and they include more fast-food options.
The former Hardee’s, located at 998 Coshocton Ave., will become a Del Taco. It’s next-door neighbor, formerly Jake’s Restaurant at 996 Coshocton Ave., will become a Burger King.
Hardee’s closed in January 2020. Jeff Lonchor, an engineer with the Columbus branch of CESO, said the building will be retrofitted to fit the new fast-food restaurant.
“It will probably be getting a face lift,” he said. “Construction is slated for summer some time, probably mid- to late-summer.”
Del Taco’s menu features Mexican and American favorites, from burritos and quesedillas to hamburgers and fries. The chain emphasizes food freshly prepared in the kitchen with the convenience of a drive-thru.
Del Taco operates 596 restaurants in 15 states. The chain opened its first location in Yermo, CA, in 1964. The 500th restaurant opened in 2008.
Other Ohio locations include Bellefontaine and Circleville. A Whitehall location is set to open soon. According to its website, the company’s remodeled designs feature bold, distinctive colors and plenty of illumination.
Jake’s Restaurant, which closed in September 2019, will be demolished and a new Burger King built. According to Lacie Blankenhorn, development services manager for the city, the city has not yet issued a demolition permit.
It did issue a construction permit in January. The contractor has six months from the date of issue to start construction.
Zoning, signage, and stormwater permits have also been issued.
The 3,235-square-foot restaurant will have a 950-square-foot inside dining area with a seating capacity of 58.
Akron-based GBC Design prepared the site plans for Burger King’s parent company, Carrols Corp. GBC’s Gary Rouse did not know when a demolition permit would be applied for nor a timetable for demolition or construction. Multiple messages and emails to Carrols Corp. were not returned.
