MOUNT VERNON – The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a flood advisory for Knox County, Marion County and Morrow County, effective until 4:30 p.m.

The advisory noted that at 1:23 p.m., doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms.

“Up to one inch of rain has already fallen in a brief period of time with these storms. Additional rain is expected over the next hour,” the National Weather Service noted in its advisory. “The heavy rainfall, in combination with wet ground conditions from recent storms, will cause minor flooding in the advisory area. Torrential rain will impact visibility on Interstate 71 through (the) early afternoon.”

These locations could experience flooding, according to the National Weather Service: Marion, Mount Vernon, Mount Gilead, Fredericktown, Gambier, Utica, Cardington, Centerburg, Ashley, Prospect, Danville, La Rue, Morral, Waldo, Chesterville, Sparta, Waterford, Caledonia, New Bloomington and Edison.

The National Weather Service has advised those who approach flooding to turn around.

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the advisory said. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
