MOUNT VERNON — Experience Mount Vernon brought community partners together on Sunday, Oct. 25 to plant 700 daffodil bulbs in the tree beds along Public Square and South Main Street, in an effort to add more floral color to downtown Mount Vernon in early spring.
The project was made possible by Scott Huvler, owner of TD Landscape and Aesthetics Committee Chairperson for Experience Mount Vernon, and Jess Good, Public Space Enhancement Coordinator for Experience Mount Vernon.
Huvler provided the tools and horticultural expertise needed for the project, sharing his knowledge with volunteers to help ensure the daffodil bulbs were planted properly for a beautiful spring bloom.

Members of the Kenyon College football team and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity volunteered their time to dig holes, plant the daffodil bulbs, and clean the city sidewalks after planting. The project also came together with help from the Mount Vernon Shade Tree Commission, which provided financial support.
“When our community comes together to invest in the vitality of downtown, the impact reaches far beyond a single project,” said Lacey Filkins, Executive Director of Experience Mount Vernon. “We couldn’t have accomplished this undertaking without our partnership with TD Landscape and the Shade Tree Commission and the help of the student volunteers from Kenyon.
“We look forward to seeing these daffodils bloom and bring some extra color to downtown next spring!”
The bulb planting builds upon Experience Mount Vernon’s other downtown beautification efforts, which include the annual hanging baskets, street-level potted plants, holiday lights, litter control, and sidewalk snow removal.
The project reflects Experience Mount Vernon’s commitment to fostering downtown vibrancy through beautification, collaboration, and community. By investing in public spaces and building partnerships with local organizations, the initiative helps create a welcoming downtown for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
Next month, Experience Mount Vernon will transform downtown into a winter wonderland, adorning Main Street with holiday wreaths and wrapping trees along South Main Street in festive lights.
Public Square will also feature a holiday light display, bringing seasonal magic to the heart of downtown and creating a welcoming destination for the community throughout the holiday season.
