COLUMBUS – Ohio’s state parks, forests, wildlife areas, and nature preserves are starting to display a dynamic palette of oranges, yellows, and reds – a breathtaking backdrop for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts for free.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) fall color report finds that hickories are showcasing their brilliant yellows while sweet gums are exhibiting an array of reds and purples.
“We are now in the midst of some amazing fall colors across the state. It’s a great time to get outdoors, especially this upcoming weekend,” said ODNR Fall Color Forester David Parrott.
“Our fall color reporters are beginning to see mostly ‘near peak’ and ‘peak’ conditions statewide.”

The Appalachian Hills Visitor Center is a great place to spot fall colors. The visitor center highlights the history of the region and offers the best views of the area.
Interactive and educational displays showcase its wildlife, forests, and ongoing efforts to restore and conserve the land. Visitors can also walk along the observation deck to view the bison herd. While bison no longer roam freely in Ohio, this herd is a symbol of conservation.
Across the street, you will find Jesse Owens State Park, which features the full-service Big Muskie Campground as well as 10 new Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired cabins. Each cabin accommodates up to six guests. The cabins and campground sites can be reserved at reserveohio.com.
Those interested in finding the most eye-catching leaves throughout the season should check out ODNR’s Fall Color website, the official guide to the changing colors. The website includes:
- Weekly color updates and information to help plan a fall color adventure;
